Beginner Pottery Classes in Toronto: What to Expect in Your First Class

Thinking about trying pottery in Toronto but not sure where to start? Here is what a first class at Zei Pottery Studio looks like, so you can walk in relaxed and ready to get your hands dirty.

Do I need any experience?

No. Most of our students have never touched clay before. Our instructors guide you step by step, from centering the clay on the wheel to shaping your first piece.

Which class should I start with?

  • Wheel Taster (1.5 hours): a single class to try the pottery wheel. Perfect if you want a taste before committing.
  • Pottery Date Night (2 hours): the same beginner-friendly experience for two, priced per couple.
  • 4-Week Course: one 3-hour class per week. You learn centering, throwing, trimming and glazing.
  • 8-Week Course: more time on the wheel to build real skills, and typically 8–14 finished pieces.

What should I wear?

Comfortable clothes you don’t mind getting a little clay on. Clay washes out easily. Short nails and tied-back hair make wheel work easier.

What’s included?

All clay, tools, glazes and firing are included. Your pieces are bisque-fired and glaze-fired by our team, and we email you when they are ready for pickup.

When are my pieces ready?

Usually 3–4 weeks after a 1-day class, and 1–2 weeks after the end of a weekly course. Please pick them up within 2 months. See our pickup hours.

Where are your studios?

We have two Toronto studios: 988 Queen St. W and 1102 College St. Paid street parking is available nearby.
