Kids Program

CLASS STRUCTURE

• This course runs for kids aged 7–15 and takes place over four weeks, with one 1.5-hour session per week.
  The last 20 minutes of each session are dedicated to cleanup, because muddy magic still needs a tidy ending.

• Throughout the program, students work with a designated amount of clay and are free to create as many pieces as they can.
  It’s not a race; quality over quantity is what really matters.

•  Each week builds on the last, moving you through every essential step of the potterymaking
  process:
  Week 1: Kids are introduced to the pottery wheel and learn how to center clay,
  control the wheel, and form simple shapes like bowls. The focus is on
  coordination, confidence, and having fun with the material.
  Week 2: Students trim their wheel-thrown pieces and learn why a good foot is
  important. The class then transitions into handbuilding, where kids create small
  plate projects using templates and textures, helping them understand form and
  proportion.
  Week 3: This week is all about imagination. Using slab and coil techniques, kids
  build a ceramic house and design its interior with personal details. This encourages
  storytelling, planning, and creative problem-solving.
  Week 4: In the final week, all pieces are painted using colorful underglazes and
  finished with a transparent glaze. Students also experiment with a special effect
  glaze on a test tile, learning how glaze transforms clay in the kiln.

• Our instructors are experienced, supportive, and ready to help at every stage, from your first wonky bowl to your final gallery-worthy mug.
• If you miss a class, don’t panic. While make-up sessions are not offered, your instructor will ensure your pieces continue through the process so you can keep up with the group. (But we definitely recommend showing up, it’s more fun that way.)
• All pieces will be bisque-fired and glaze-fired by our team. You’ll receive an email notification once everything is ready for pickup, usually within 3-4 weeks after the course ends.

Please note: Make-up classes are not guaranteed. However, if notice is given at least 3 days in advance, and if space is available in another session, a make-up class may be arranged.We appreciate your understanding.

Please note: Pottery is a beautifully unpredictable craft. Sometimes the kiln gods are kind… sometimes they’re not. Zei Pottery Studio cannot be held responsible for cracks, warping, glaze surprises, or other unexpected outcomes that happen during firing. But don’t worry, your instructor will help you choose the pieces most likely to survive the adventure.
